Tanzanite is named after the state of Tanzania; it was discovered in 1967 in the Mererani Hills of Northern Tanzania. Tanzanite is the blue-purple variety of the Zoisite mineral family, imitating sapphire blue, violet, and burgundy, depending on the crystal’s position.
