Herderite is a rare phosphate mineral that belongs to the apatite group, typically found in pegmatites and hydrothermal veins. It is composed of calcium, beryllium, phosphate, and hydroxide, with the chemical formula CaBePO4(OH). Herderite crystals are usually colorless, white, yellow, green, or occasionally pale blue, and they often exhibit a vitreous to resinous luster. Herderite was first discovered in 1828 in the Sauberg Mine in Erzgebirge, Saxony, Germany. The mineral was named after Baron Sigmund Von Herder (1776-1838), a German mining official who made significant contributions to mineralogy. The Sauberg Mine, the type locality for Herderite, is renowned for its diverse mineral assemblages, which have been studied and admired by mineralogists and collectors for nearly two centuries.
Herderite is a phosphate mineral belonging to the apatite, phosphate group. It forms mono clinic crystals, often twinned and variable in color from colorless through yellow to green. It forms a series with the more common hydroxylherderite, which has more hydroxide ion than fluoride located in Afghanistan, Brazil, Namibia, Germany, Russia, USA, and Pakistan.
