Color is the first thing most buyers notice about a gemstone, but it's also the least straightforward to shop by, since the same color can come from entirely different mineral species at very different price points. What Actually Causes Gemstone Color

Gemstone color comes from one of two general sources: trace elements within the crystal structure, or the structure itself interacting with light. Most colored gemstones fall into the first category. Corundum, the mineral species behind both sapphire and ruby, is colorless in its pure form; trace amounts of iron and titanium produce blue sapphire, while trace chromium produces ruby's red. This is why sapphire and ruby are chemically the same mineral with different coloring impurities, rather than two unrelated species.

The second category, structural color, is less common but shows up in a few notable gems. Moonstone's soft glow, called adularescence, comes from light scattering between microscopic layers within the stone rather than from any trace element, which is why moonstone's effect looks different from a color caused by chemical impurity. Understanding which category a stone's color falls into also explains why some colors are more stable than others: trace-element color is generally permanent and unaffected by light exposure, while a few structural or delicate colors can be more sensitive to heat or UV exposure over time.

How Gemstone Color Is Graded

Gemologists describe color using three factors together, not color name alone.

Hue

Hue is the color itself, blue, green, red, and so on, including where a stone sits between two adjacent hues, such as a blue-green aquamarine leaning more blue or more green.

Tone

Tone describes how light or dark a color is, from very pale to very dark, independent of the hue itself. Two sapphires can both be "blue" while one is pale and airy and the other is deep and almost inky.

Saturation

Saturation describes color intensity, from grayish and muted to vivid and pure. This is often the single biggest driver of price within a single hue and tone combination, since a vivid, saturated stone is rarer than a similarly toned but grayish or brownish one.

Together, these three factors explain why two stones described with the same color name can look, and cost, very differently.

How Color Affects Gemstone Value

Within any single gemstone species, color is typically the single largest driver of price, often outweighing clarity for colored stones in a way it doesn't for diamond, where clarity and cut dominate pricing more heavily. A vividly saturated, evenly toned sapphire commands a significant premium over a pale or grayish one of the same size and clarity grade. This is part of why color grading uses the three-factor system (hue, tone, saturation) described above rather than a single simplified color name; two stones both called "blue sapphire" can differ enormously in value based on exactly where they fall on those three scales.
