Epidote is one of the most exceptional displaying minerals. The most delicate and most desirable form of this mineral is in elegant elongated crystals that are incredibly lustrous and often interconnected. This form of epidote is highly admired by collectors and forms one of the finest mineral showpieces. Epidote color is almost invariably green, in all different shades and tones, with a pistachio color habit being very typical.
It is named after the numerous crystal faces. Relatively large crystals of flawless facet rough are not uncommon, but faceted stones are limited to small sizes and may appear black because of the dark tone of the material. Named in 1801 by Rene Just Haüy from the Greek επιδοσιζ ("epidosis"), meaning "increase", in allusion to the crystal characteristic of one long side at the base of the prism.
It forms a group of related minerals, with the mineral Epidote being the most conspicuous member of the group. Two outstanding members of the Epidote group are Hancockite "Epidote-(Pb)", and Epidote-(Sr). Though often rated as varieties of epidote, these two forms are classified by the International Mineralogical Association, as individual mineral species.
