José Bonifácio de Andrada e Silva, a Brazilian mineralogist and statesman, identified this mineral in the early 1800s. He was a prominent figure in both science and politics, helping to lay the groundwork for the mineralogical study of garnets. Andradite is a calcium iron silicate mineral, a member of the Garnet group, known for its variety of colors, including yellow-green (Demantoid), yellow (Topazolite), and black (Melanite). It is named after the Brazilian mineralogist José Bonifácio de Andrada e Silva, who first discovered the mineral in the 19th century. Andradite is prized for its high luster, vibrant color variations, and strong dispersion, particularly in its Demantoid form, which can outshine diamonds with its fire. The chemical formula of Andradite is Ca₃Fe₂(SiO₄)₃, where calcium (Ca), iron (Fe³⁺), and silicon (Si) are the primary elements. It belongs to the nesosilicate class of minerals.
